Tony Wong, a 62-year-old youth basketball coach, was sentenced to two years in state prison for sexually assaulting one of his players. Wong worked at Alpine Recreation Center, operated by the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks in Los Angeles, CA. The abuse is believed to have occurred between the 1970s and 2016.
Wong was sentenced by Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Dorothy Reyes who ordered the defendant to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. Deputy District Attorney Christine Von Helmolt of the Sex Crimes Division prosecuted the case. In May of 2017, Wong pleaded no contest to three counts of lewd acts upon a child.
According to prosecutors, Tony Wong, began grooming the boy when he was 14 and invited him to play for his team. Between January and August 2004, Wong sexually molested the boy at the recreation center and in hotel rooms when the team traveled.
